Ingredients
- For the Pasta:
- 1 pound elbow macaroni (or pasta of your choice)
- For the Cheese Sauce:
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 4 cups milk (whole or 2%)
- 1 teaspoon mustard powder (optional)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 3 cups shredded cheese (sharp cheddar is classic, but you can mix in others like Gruyère, Monterey Jack, or mozzarella)
- For Topping (optional):
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Cook the pasta:
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Make the cheese sauce:
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Once melted, whisk in the flour to create a roux. Cook for about 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Gradually add the milk, whisking to prevent lumps. Continue to cook and whisk until the mixture thickens (about 5-7 minutes).
- Stir in the mustard powder and garlic powder (if using), then add salt and pepper to taste.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and mix in the shredded cheese until melted and smooth.
- Combine pasta and cheese sauce:
- Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until well coated.
- Optional: Prepare the topping:
- If using, mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and Parmesan cheese in a small bowl.
- Assemble and bake:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Pour the macaroni and cheese mixture into a greased baking dish.
- If using, sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top.
- Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
- Serve:
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your homemade macaroni and cheese
